J.B. was (is) the son of Bird & Sarah (Brantley) Gean. His father first married Martha Seymour in 1834, but she died in 1837, without issue. Second he married the daughter of Kirk and Flora C. Brantley in 1842. They had six children, four of whom were still living when the book was written. His father was a prominent farmer from NC, who moved to AR in 1856. He moved to Jefferson and lived with his son (the principal of the sketch) at the time of the book. His wife died on May 11, 1883. His father (J.B. Gean's grandfather) was William Gean, a native or NC, and hero of the Revolution, fighting many battles, and he died in 1848. J.B. married Eliza Rhoden on April 8, 1871, and the union was blessed with one child, Emma E. Eliza died, and he remained a widower until October 8, 1876 when he married Mary R. Gordon, daughter of James & Mary Gordon. Mary & J.B. had five children together, three of whom were still living at home at the time of the article. The five children were: Mary A., John H., Clara B., Lillie I., and Oris B.

Patriarch, Ex-Sheriff of Grant Co. dies. 9-22-1850 2-20-1936 Pine Bluff, February 21
"John B. Gean, 85, a resident of this section for 80 years and widely known in public affairs, died at his home on Princeton Pike, 12 miles from Pine Bluff, yesterday afternoon. He was postmater at Sheridan during the Cleveland adminstration and former sheriff of Grant Co.. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Sheridan Baptist church.
Surviving are seven children, 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The children are : Mrs. Emma Rushing, Houston Gean, and Mrs. J. Thad Wilson, all of Park Hill, North Little Rock; Mrs. A.D. Crossett, Pine Bluff; Bernard Gean, Dyess; L.G. Gean and Mrs R.B. Glover, Dodge City, Kansas."
